About the artist
I became interested in film while still at school, and have been working on small film projects since I was 15 years old. I progressed from working with mini dv towards using a digital slr to create animated shorts, manipulating objects and people to create work which has a distinct visual texture. I have always been impressed by the animated work of Svankmajer, but my more recent obsession with the films of Andrei Tarkovsky has inspired work which uses animation, so often a comic medium, to tackle more serious subjects.
About the work
Fold grew out of my interest in choreographing the human body through animation, but also carries ideas about childhood, masculinity and the weight and texture of the urban environment. It was as if, if only for a brief second, something had been lifted, the fabric of possibilities torn, and all around a strangeness both terrible and sublime. This work took about a month to prepare and was edited under timed conditions in just over 15 hours.
