About the artist
Magali Charrier is a freelance director based in Brighton. She originally trained at Les Beaux-Arts de Montpellier, France, where she specialised in experimental animation. When she moved to England in 1997, she went on to gain a First Class Honors Degree in Choreography, Dance and Visual Arts at the University of Brighton. Her eclectic background in arts, live performance and animation has led to her developing a very personal visual approach to the medium of filmmaking. Her work is visually compelling, based on highly original ideas. Otherworldly, engaging and accessible, it has won Magali many awards across the globe and has been broadcast and toured internationally. Recent commissions include works for Channel 4, BBC, London Greater Authority and the UK Film Council.

About the work
Through the combination of animation with live action I wanted to create a sense of playful self-expression that knows no boundary, no self-consciousness and has for sole purpose pure entertainment and joy. On another hand, I was also interested in the grief that comes with the loss of childhood and the idea that perhaps most of our lives are dedicated to chasing what has been lost: the happiness, the grace and the elated freedom. I wanted to go back to that and see what was left of it. The film is a UK/Canada co-production commissioned by Channel 4 and Bravo!FACT. It was shot in Toronto, Canada. The animation was carried out at LIFT (Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto), rotoscoped and hand drawn with chalk on a blackboard.
